Various - Motown The Complete No 1s

Just got it for my mother. Great review

I didn't quite get it the first time but the bonus tracks were number ones for other artists not on Motown.

I did manage to find a copy of the 50th Anniversary box issued in '08 for a modest price. I also bought the two Hitsville boxes from the early 90's which cover Motown's history up to the early 90's for a small fraction of what they originally sold for. Those are 8 cds and use different mixing than the Complete singles box 14 volume box set. There's also a 4 disc stereo box set issued in 2005 by Shout and it included longer mixes of many hits.

The first series and perhaps best series to capture the Motown hits was Motown Chartbusters issued in the UK on vinyl and later cd. They were issued almost yearly from the late 60's through early 80's and included the 45 versions. This is all before the Now series for current pop hits or Gold disc for radio recurrents. It also is the only place you'll find the proper 45 version of J5's "Mama's Pearl". I never get rid of different pressings because the 60's had the stereo v mono debate, hot mix vs Lp, and when compilers go searching they sometimes make a unique mix in an attempt to find or recreate the original.

You can never go wrong with Motown. I'm not huge fan of widescope boxsets like this one. This reminds me of the 10 cd 101 track Motown Anthology MEI digital media issued in 1997 which while leaving most of the disc's space empty did give a handful or rarities including Stevie Wonder's "Just enough to ease the pain" which was never issued again on cd and is one of his best songs. At the time, it didn't sell well as sound samples weren't available and the track listing wasn't even on the back.


I do have their complete singles boxes which came to 14 volumes with each volume averaging 6 cds but it only focused on Motown's time in Detroit which was through 1972. Despite having 90% of the tracks on those, I sprung for it and don't regret it since Hip-o select is now out of business.


The box set you have has alot of 80's and 90's material. They go back on forth on which version (single or album) they include on that box you are holding. Overall though if you're not a completist looking for certain mixes, edits, and album cuts, you'll be very satisfied and a good representation of Motown if it's the only item you'll ever acquire with their trademark.

That is a great set Jamie. I got the original one and really love it. The packaging is outstanding. I'm glad they reissued it that way.

That box is incredible Jamie. I would buy it just for the packaging. I bought a Motown box set back in 1992’, 4 CD set of their hits to 1971. They love to keep repackaging theses. This one is outstanding. Motown is a fun place to visit and when you do let me know.
