Review by Chrystan Williams

The album "I Want To Be Happy Cha Cha" by Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra starring Warren Covington is a delightful musical experience for fans of the cha-cha genre. The album features 12 tracks, all of which are performed with the utmost precision and skill by the talented musicians.

From the upbeat and lively "Tea For Two Cha Cha" to the melancholic yet beautiful "Ebb Tide Cha Cha," the album showcases the versatility and range of the orchestra. The brass section is particularly impressive, delivering powerful and dynamic performances that add depth and dimension to each track.

Warren Covington's vocals are another highlight of the album. His smooth and soulful voice perfectly complements the music, adding an extra layer of emotion and depth to each song.

About Tommy Dorsey And His Orchestra Starring Warren Covington

Orchestra under the leading of Tommy Dorsey, formed in 1935 and disbanded a first time in 1946. By late 1946, the band business was indeed having problems. In December 1946, some members of the band (including Tommy Dorsey) were calling it quits. However, less than two years later, he formed an orchestra with exactly the same name (Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra), but with different members. Dorsey's orchestra was known primarily for its renderings of ballads at dance tempos, frequently with singers such as Jack Leonard and Frank Sinatra.

For some reason there was a resurgence in 20s music around 1974 and this song was included on an album 20s style by the Charlston City All Stars which Enoch Light had some connection, it was not redone as a cha cha. It was also on Grand Award ( ABC Westminster / Grand Award )

One of the first "stereophonic" albums my parents bought for the new stereo hi-fi when I was a kid.  Great sounding record!  Love it!

One of the first "stereophonic" LP's I ever heard, after parents bought their new, 2-piece, blonde-wood with legs Emerson stereo (which my mom pronounced "steeereo"). The separation was very discreet and almost exaggerated on the early stereo recordings. I remember the sounds coming at you from all over the room! By the way, the record still sounds great, though a little scratchy.

That sounds pretty fun...

I just got a 50 cent LP at yard sale: Enoch Light and the Light Brigade Play Happy Cha Cha's, Vol. 2
Really great cover art: an illustration of Cuban conga player and cha-cha dancers.
